HomeCost Canada

Understand take-home pay, affordability, and the monthly cost of a home.

The project in plain English

Why it matters

For Individuals and couples planning a home purchase

The problem

Salary, tax, mortgage payments, and running costs often sit in separate calculators, making it difficult to see the household picture.

My contribution

A guided planner combines Ontario income-tax estimates, household affordability, down-payment planning, and home costs in one analysis.

The value

Helps people compare assumptions and discuss a home budget using a clearer, shared set of numbers.

Skills demonstrated
  • Business rules
  • Resilient systems
  • Automated testing

Scope & limits. Educational demonstration, not financial or mortgage advice. Models Ontario 2026 with a constant interest rate; it excludes mortgage insurance and some lender rules, credits, and costs. No customer savings or commercial impact is claimed.

From problem to action

How someone uses it

  1. Enter household assumptions

  2. Review costs and affordability

  3. Compare scenarios and export

What I built

  • Model one or two incomes, with each partner taxed individually before combining household results.
  • Compare mortgage scenarios and export an analysis as PDF, CSV, or a text summary.
  • Continue calculating locally when the server request fails, using the same calculation engine.
